  • Preliminary Exam of IAS Recruitment by UPSC - Total of two papers are there in the Preliminary Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Recruitment Exam and these papers are General Studies (GS) & Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). In the Paper-2 CSAT of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Preliminary Exam mostly objective type multiple choice questions are arranged from Comprehension, Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Decision Making & Problem Solving, General Mental Ability, Basic Numeracy & Data Interpretation and English Language Comprehension Skills. Remember, there is Negative Marking for wrong answers of questions in this Preliminary Exam of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Recruitment Test.
  • Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Mains Examination - Mains written exam of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Recruitment normally held after 4-5 months after the preliminary test of IAS recruitment. A total mark of Main Written Exam of IAS Recruitment is 2000 and there are total of 9 papers. Amongst the total 9 papers, first two selected papers are qualifying papers and applicant required to choose two option papers as well from 26 pre-defined papers of UPSC. Applicants should pass in these papers to qualify for the interview round.

IAS Exam Paper Syllabus Question Format - CSAT Preliminary Test UPSC IAS Entrance

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has declared in 2010 that from 2011 the format of IAS Examination will be changed a bit. Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) examination is going to be introduced instead of Preliminary IAS Test Examination from 2011. IAS Test Examination organized by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment in Central Government.

IAS Examination Format Question Paper Syllabus: - IAS Entrance Examination has been categorized in three tests and they are Preliminary Test, Main Examination and Personal Interview round. But, from 2011 the preliminary test will be known as Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT).
  • Question Paper-1 of CSAT IAS Examination – First paper of Civil Service Aptitude Test examination of IAS Examination is based on General Studies (G.S.).
  • Question Paper-2 of CSAT IAS Examination – Second Paper of Civil Service Aptitude Test examination of IAS Examination is based Comprehension, Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Decision Making and Problem Solving, General Mental Ability, Basic Numeric (General knowledge of Mathematics), Data Interpretation (Chart, Graph, Table, Data Sufficiency etc) and English language Comprehension Skills.
IAS CSAT Examination Syllabus Civil Service Aptitude Test: - Basic Numeric and Data Interpretation and English Language Comprehension Skills questions comes from Class-10th standard studies. The questions of General Studies paper comes from Indian History, Indian Freedom Activities, Indian Government Policy, General Knowledge, Indian and World Geography, Sustainable Development, Demography, Environment, Biodiversity etc. The question format of Preliminary IAS Test (CSAT) is only Multiple Choice and Objective Type based.

IAS CSAT Examination Civil Service Aptitude Test Marks and Timings: - The total mark of Preliminary IAS Examination is taken on 200 marks and total of 2-hours examination. Negative marking is applicable in Preliminary IAS Examination.

The IAS Preliminary Examination normally happens in May-June month every year and the application form normally issued in November-December month every year in Employment News, Rozgar Patrika and in Post Offices. After four to five months from the Preliminary IAS Examination (CSAT) the IAS Main Examination been organized. The main IAS Examination is taken of 2000 marks in total.

IAS Main Examination Question Paper Format: -
  • Paper-1 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on Indian Law.
  • Paper-2 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on English.
  • Paper-3 of IAS Mains Examination – 200 marks on Essay Writing.
  • Paper-4 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on General Studies first paper.
  • Paper-5 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on General Studies second paper.
  • Paper-6 and 7 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on First Optional paper.
  • Paper-8 and 9 of IAS Mains Examination – 300 marks on Second Optional paper.
Amongst the 26 subjects candidates need to select any two optional subjects. Few subjects from which optional subjects are taken – Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Public Administration, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce and Accountancy, Economics etc.

After the successful completion of IAS Mains Examination; candidates are called for Verbal Personal Interview round. Total of 300 marks oral interview is taken in English or local language.

IAS Examination Qualification Eligibility Criteria Requirement: - Graduates from any recognized University and the candidates should be between 21 and 30 years of age (as on 1st August on the respective year). Check more details on IAS Examination.
