Tamralipta – New Name of Purba Medinipur District of Bengal



Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal could be changed to ‘Tamralipta’ district. Tamralipta (Tamralipto) is the ancient name of Tamluk located in West Bengal, India. In the year 2002, West Bengal Government has divided the Medinipur (Midnapore) district in two parts named Purba Medinipur and Paschim Mednipur. Tamluk is the district head quarter of Purba Medinipur and Medinipur Town is for Paschim Medinipur district of Bengal.

After a long demand of the people residing at Purba Medinipur especially of Tamluk town, current Chief Minister of Bengal Ms. Mamata Banerjee has passed the proposal to the Central Government (Prime Minister, New Delhi) for changing the Purba Medinipur district name to Tamralipta because of ancient / historical values.

As soon as Central Government pass the proposal, the name of Purba Mednipur district would be changed officially to new name Tamralipta District of Bengal.
